Meet the New Chase Field

Prior to the season, they installed a humidor in Arizona, much like they did several years ago in Colorado. The underlying ideas were similar: rein in the offense, which was increasingly out of control. Chase Field was never as hitter-friendly as Coors, and nothing will be as hitter-friendly as old Coors until there’s a big-league team in Mexico City, but there’s value in trying to make the game more neutral. The perception was that play in Chase was too lopsided. Those in control wanted to balance things out.

I wrote about the possible consequences of the humidor in February. Even better than that, Alan Nathan wrote about the possible consequences of the humidor the previous April. The potential existed for a dramatic effect. While part of the stated goal was to just make the baseballs more grippy — thereby benefiting the pitchers — the humidor would also decrease each baseball’s coefficient of restitution. Put another way, in theory, the ball wouldn’t come off the bat quite so fast. Now that we’re three-quarters of the way into the season, it’s possible to take a look at how things have actually gone. If you’re in a rush, let me give you the conclusion right here: Chase has turned into what was expected. It does seem to have become more neutral, indeed. Not in so much of a rush? Below, I’ll present the basic evidence.

You don’t even need to look that far, if you don’t want to. For example, last year, in Diamondbacks home games, there were 215 homers. Meanwhile, in Diamondbacks road games, there were 176 homers. This year, in Diamondbacks home games, there have been 130 homers. Meanwhile, in Diamondbacks road games, there have been 134 homers. Look at that! Lopsided home-run factor erased.

That’s also far too simple. Numbers like that can lead you in a direction, but they can’t really prove much of anything. Let’s take things to another level, now. At FanGraphs, we have splits information stretching back to 2002. So let’s check out almost two decades of Chase Field year-to-year park factors. The plot below includes wOBA, K-BB%, and average runs per game. For each measure, I’ve taken Diamondbacks home-game results, and divided by Diamondbacks road-game results. For anyone confused, this includes both the Diamondbacks and their opponents.

A neutral park factor would come out to 1.0. What you can see here is a bunch of variation. That’s just the nature of the thing, when you’re dealing with single-season samples. But, this includes information for 17 years. This year’s wOBA park factor is the second-lowest. This year’s runs-per-game park factor is the third-lowest. Interestingly, there hasn’t been positive movement in K-BB% — that’s where you’d think better grippiness might show up. No such gain is apparent. That doesn’t mean the baseballs themselves don’t feel a little more tacky. That doesn’t mean pitchers in Arizona don’t feel more comfortable pitching these days. There’s just nothing to see in terms of walks or strikeouts. We’ll see how that plays out over a greater number of seasons.

Now, from 2002 – 2017, the Chase Field wOBA factor was 1.06. So far this year, it’s 1.02. And, from 2002 – 2017, the Chase Field runs-per-game factor was 1.13. So far this year, it’s 1.05. That’s all neat enough, and it does point us somewhere, but of course, this is the Statcast era. So let’s dig into that information, with the help of Baseball Savant.

As mentioned, one of the theorized effects of the humidor was that it would reduce overall exit velocity. Here’s how all the ballparks played between 2015 – 2017. This shows the difference between overall average home exit velocity and overall average road exit velocity.

Chase Field shows up all the way to the left — on average, balls in Arizona were being hit harder by more than one full mile per hour. One thing we can’t easily account for is calibration error. It’s possible that, in some ballparks, exit velocities were being over- or under-reported. But at least the Arizona figure makes sense, given the area’s low average humidity. The baseballs would’ve been lighter and bouncier. Hence the humidor. Here’s the same plot now, but showing only data for 2018:

All of a sudden, the ballpark effect is gone. Balls in Arizona are being hit as hard as they’re being hit not in Arizona. This is exactly what was predicted to happen, with the Chase Field factor dropping from first to 17th. The balls are heavier and less bouncy, and while they’re not too heavy or too dead, the low area humidity has successfully been negated. Chase Field has apparently become exit velocity-neutral. That’s not the kind of thing you’d be likely to notice on any given ball in play, but for fun, here’s a home run by David Peralta from 2017:

Here’s a remarkably similar batted ball from Peralta in 2018, but with a slightly lower exit velocity:

I’m not saying the humidor is what turned that from a home run into an in-play fly ball, but those are the kinds of batted balls that would be affected the most. When a hitter hits the ball square, it’ll still get out. But those just-barely home runs from before might now be likely to turn into different outcomes. It’s something that would feel most obvious to long-time Diamondbacks hitters in batting practice. They know the ball doesn’t scoot exactly like it used to. They can see the increased number of batted balls that end up on the warning track.

Just what does a subtle difference in exit velocity mean? We can turn now to Statcast’s expected wOBA metric. Here’s another plot for 2015 – 2017, showing the difference between home xwOBA and road xwOBA:

Chase Field again, all the way to the left. Here’s the plot for 2018 alone:

…and there’s Chase Field in 14th place. But we can go one level deeper. Instead of just looking at overall xwOBA, why don’t we look at the same plots, but for just xwOBA on contact? The plot for 2015 – 2017:

A difference of one point in the other direction. Chase Field here ranks in 19th place. It’s crucial to understand that we still do need more data, because we have only four and a half months, and this stuff can take a while to find its level. We might not know the real, exact truth about the new Chase Field until 2020 or 2021 or whenever. But based on the early evidence, at least, the humidor has functioned just about as it was intended to. I don’t know if the balls themselves are now sufficiently grippy, but the batted balls aren’t coming off so hot. Through this point of the season, Chase Field seems to be more or less batted ball-neutral. It’s a significant change for what had been one of baseball’s most hitter-friendly environments.

For outside observer purposes, I don’t know how much this really matters. In the short-term, because our FanGraphs park factors take a while to update, know that Diamondbacks hitters are being underrated by wRC+, and Diamondbacks pitchers are being overrated by ERA-. That’s not too terribly important. Maybe the bigger takeaway is that, where there are two functioning humidors, there might soon be more. There might soon be 30. I don’t know what the argument would be against storing balls under league-wide consistent conditions. The ballparks are never going to all be the same. The baseballs, however, probably should be. We can talk about that some other time.

So, why can’t Fangraphs do some manual adjustments to the park factors? It would be silly to overreact to one year results for most parks, but if the humidor was predicted to dramatically alter the results in AZ, and then the results in AZ were dramatically altered almost exactly as predicted, isn’t it reasonable to manually change the park factors at least somewhat for that particular park?

Because it’s still just one year and there could be other things besides just the humidor going on. Take a look at CLE and WAS in the 2018 charts. They’re all of a sudden hitter’s parks as crazy as ARI used to be. I can’t speak to CLE, but here in WAS they didn’t do anything. So that means … I dunno … weather effects? Selectively juiced balls (ha ha)?

Looking at the ARI data and deciding since it’s what you would expect a humidor to do that it’s somehow automatically more valid than any other set of 3/4 season data is literally confirmation bias

I just think that as dramatic an impact as humidors have (we think), it seems useless to put much weight on how Chase played when there was no humidor. With other ballparks, weather factors will make huge differences in how it plays, but I don’t really think that is likely with Chase, a park that is played with a closed roof over 90% of the time.

It might still make sense to regress or even zero out park factors for a couple years when we know that some big change was just made.

park factors are notoriously not stable until many years (see HappyFunBall’s comment on CLE & WAS this season). By the time PF’s are reliable, you’ll have enough seasons with the humidor to have an effect.

Did you do anything to look into games played with the roof open vs closed?? IIRC there’s a big difference between R/G in Miami, Arizona, and Milwaukee based on that factor alone.

Triples at BOB are more a result of the wierd angles all around the park. Between the Center-field wall and the bullpen areas, so many strange bounces.

What is going on in Houston? Ten-Run Field has been playing similar to the Astrodome the past 2-3 years (exaggeration). People will always complain about how cheap a home run to left field is, but it is hard to get solid wood on the ball there. Poor batter’s eye? Houston got even more humid?

Humidity lowers the density of air and makes the ball go further.

Edit – you probably meant the humidity effect on ball storage, if so, my bad.

Been a while since I looked at it, but Houston’s issue appeared to be primarily a problem with contact, and not with the flight after contact. Either something with ball storage is affecting ball, something in stadium is making it more difficult for hitters to make solid contact, or we are having a weird couple of years.

2015-2017 WAS looked like a neutral park for exit velocities. Now in 2018 it jumped up to the most hitter friendly. What’s going on there?

Why is baseball trying to limit offense in any park? What is wrong with each park having its own character and quirks. Is light air more of a benefit to a hitter than a short porch? Are the ball flight characteristics in Denver or Phoenix any more beneficial to a hitter than being a left- handed hitter in Yankee Stadium? Larry Walker is denied his place in the HOF but Roger Maris gets credit for hitting 61 HR’s when the RF fence was 296 feet from the plate and 4 feet high. If ball park dimensions are dramatically different then trying to build a ball that is equitable for all parks is a fools errand.

Minor point — Excluding the park data for 1998-2001 simply because they’re not on FanGraphs is a bad idea. Is there a scientifically valid reason to start the study in 2002?

I only bring this up because adding those 4 years lowers the overall park factor pre-humidor. For example, the R/G park factor dips from your stated 1.13 to 1.11, if you use all the data.

Park factors can vary significantly from year to year for no clear-cut reason. For instance, by R/G starting in 2012, this park factor goes 1.12, 0.97, 1.16, 1.06, 1.22, 1.20, and now 1.06 — making dramatic change look like the norm, not the exception. I’m definitely NOT denying a humidor effect, but I don’t think it’s so easy to prove the degree of its impact.

Do you think you can write one about how Houston’s climate affects how large the stadium plays? Everyone seems to think it’s a baby stadium, but it actually tends to be pitcher friendly.

Anything in the works on Houston’s road-vs-home performance? For the last 2 years, both their W% and scoring have been MUCH better on the road, while their run prevention is the same. Most of these numbers are truly historic:

Astros since 2017:
— Road: 94-47, .667 W%, .682 pythag, 5.87 RS/G, 3.87 RA/G.
— Home: 81-62, .566 W%, .586 pythag, 4.66 RS/G, 3.85 RA/G.

Who the hell wins two-thirds of their ROAD games???
Only 20 past teams did that in ONE season.
This is almost 2 full years.

Their road edge in W% (road minus home) is greater than any team but the 1994-95 Cubs, which were both shortened seasons — 27 fewer games than Houston has so far.

Their +282 road run differential ranks 8th of all modern 2-year spans, and leads current MLB teams by 103 runs.
Their 5.87 RS/G leads MLB by 0.84, or 136 runs per year.
It’s the best 2-year RS/G since the 2000-01 Mariners, and the best since 1951 outside the PED era.

Among all modern 2-year spans, Houston ranks:
— 7th in road W% (and 1st since 1910)
— 10th in road pythag

The only teams in their road-W% neighborhood were the dominant Cubs, Giants and Pirates of the early dead-ball era, and a couple of pre-WWII Yankee dynasties.

I could go on and on.

Funny you bring this up. I read about the A’s win last night and how it broke a 7-game Astros winning streak at Oakland. I spit my coffee when the next phrase read “their (the Astros’) longest winning streak at the Coliseum since a 10-game winning streak in 2016-17”

I have a feeling this Houston thing isn’t well known. When they lost 5 straight at home last week, someone on MLB Tonight said their fans were thinking, what is this? – we’re not supposed to lose at home! Maybe he was thinking only of last year’s postseason. when they went 8-1 at home, 3-6 away. But overall, they’ve been absurdly better away both years, and specifically in scoring.

Would it also be prudent to dismiss data on players who were around during these times? I feel many recent Backs lineups were built on a decent amount of power, whereas this year you could also count out JD Martinez contribution combined with Goldy’s 1st half struggles to also have some effect on these overall stats?

Why not look at specific 50 hitters who have had more than 50 AB in the stadium and see if the sample size shows any difference?

Park factor models are built to always compare apples to apples…so when the team had JD, comparison between his home and road numbers were a part of the calculus. With Goldy, we don’t want to adjust the park analysis for his slump, because who is to say that the humidor isn’t partly to blame for his 1st half struggles? Maybe he was hitting a lot of 295 ft fly balls. I don’t have the answer, but we can’t know in advance which direction causation runs here.
